The Names of Jehovah: Jehovah Sabaoth

The Names of Jehovah
Part 5 Jehovah -Sabbaoth

What historic battle are you most familiar with and why?

Topic: The Lord of Host
We all have to fight our own battles, but we don’t have to fight them alone. Throughout Scripture we are promised that we are never left to fight our battles without help or direction. (Ps 91:11) Our Lord is the supreme commander of angelic armies.

(1 Sam 17:45-47) Jehovah-Sabaoth means the Lord of Hosts or The Lord of Armies. Mosts of us know the account of David and Goliath and how David tried to encourage the Israelite armies. For his efforts, his own brother slandered his character and wrongly judged his motives in an effort to discourage him. Even his king tried to dissuade him. Before David fought the giant, he fought a word battle in which he had to use much thought, caution and patience. Many times we have more trouble with our friends and family than with our enemies. (Matt 10:36) David’s confidence and focus on the Lord of Hosts allowed him the victory not only over the physical enemy, but also over the discouraging influence of those close to him.

(Prov 18:10) David called on the Lord of Host and found deliverance through His name. So too, when we are confronted with a battle, when we’ve reached the end of our rope, we can run to Jehovah-Sabaoth for safety, guidance, and victory. When His righteous ones have a sense of powerlessness, He is ready to come to their aid because the battle belongs to the Lord.

Those who run to Him have certain characteristics. First, their motives are pure. (1Cor1:31). Even though David was accused of having wrong motives, he was motivated by a true love for God and desire to bring glory and honor to the Lord. Even though others may never know or understand our true motives, God is the only one who knows our hearts. (Ps 139;23-24).

Second, they are willing to let the Lord lead the battle. (Ps 27:11, 61:2). David trusted that the name of Jehovah-Sabaoth would have the victory over a sward and shield. Taking control in battle may seem like the natural thing to do, but allowing God to lead will assure us the victory. (1John 5:4).

Third, they place no confidence in the flesh. (Ps 118:8). David would not wear Saul’s armor just in case God didn’t come through for Him. Many times we have our own back up plans, just in case….But God always comes through when we are left with no back-up.

Fourth, they are willing to stand alone. (Luke 6;22). David was willing to fight alone because he believed that God would deliver him. Sometimes we have to stand alone for what we believe.

(Rev 19:11-16,19). Jesus was, is and always will be Jehovah-Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts. This title reveals His omnipotence and reminds us that He is our Leader and Protector. For those times when we feel we can’t go on, when we find ourselves in turmoil with no other source of help, we can meditate adn call on the magnificent and sufficient name of Jehovah-Sabaoth.
