Judges Lesson 9 Chapters 15-16 "Samson, Smokin' Hot or a Hot Mess"

Two of Samson's three Nazarite requirements have been breached. Only one remains. Unbeknownst to him, his Philistine wife has been given to his best man. As we turn our attention this week to the remaining account of Samson's life, we will watch to see if he will employ his great gift to defeat the Philistines or to achieve his own ends, Thus far, this judge has shown remarkably poor judgment. Though it is tempting to read his story and marvel at his lack of self-control, we are better served to humbly ask how we are like him, marveling instead at a God who can use even the fickle Samsons of this world for His purpose.

Read Judges 15-16.

1.Summarize Chapters 15 &16 in 2 or 3 sentences each.

4. Apply: How does Samson's story warn us about the danger of "hot anger" and escalating nature of retaliation? What wise strategies might we as Christians use to keep anger regulated instead of raging?




 Now look at Judges 15:9-20.

5. Both David and Samson stood up to the Philistines. Contrast their motives for doing so:

Now focus on Judges 16:1-22.

7. Gaza was a major Philistine seaport about forty miles from Samson's hometown. What distracts Samson upon his arrival there? (16:1)

   Does this shock you? Why or why not?


8.What "perfect weapon" do the Philistine lords decide to use to learn the secret of Samson's strength?


Now look at Judges 16:23-31.

9. Who did the Philistines believe had given Samson into their hand? (16:23-24)

11. Apply: God gave Samson a calling (to deliver Israel from the Philistines) and spiritual gifts (strength and His special presence). What calling and gifts has He given you? Give both a positive and a negative example of how you have used them. 



12. What attitude must form the foundation for using our gifts and calling as they are intended?
