Introductions to 1 Samuel

Lesson 1

We will not only answer these questions, but we will discuss where we are in Israel's history when the story of 1 Samuel opens. 

  1. Who wrote the book of 1 Samuel? 


 Author is unknown. However, Samuel's death is described in 1 Samuel 25, and he may have been one of the authors. Nathan, and/or Gad could perhaps have written  part(s) of it. Whoever the human author was, the divine authorship is God. 





2. To whom was it written? It was written originally to the Israelites. The book  of Samuel is history 101 for the Israelites. It is their identity as a nation. It is also written for us today. 








3. When was it written? Not exactly known but may be between 1100/971 BC to 722 BC (before the invasion of the northern kingdom).









4. In what style was it written? Historical  Narrative 









5. What are the central themes of the book? A story of contrasts: Strong - Weak

proud - humble; Saul - Davd


External appearance - Internal character


Sovereignty  of God - Man's agendas
