1 Samuel 16&17 A New King Lesson 7

1 Samuel 16 & 17

1. Why does God send Samuel to Jesse the Bethlehemite (16:1)?

2. In 16:6-7, why does the Lord reject Eliab? Fill in the wording below:

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as __man____ sees, for man looks at the _____outward __appearance __ but the Lord looks at the __heart_________.”

3. What statement does the Lord repeat as Jesse’s first seven sons pass before Him?

The Lord has not chosen this one. The point is: Don't judge on the outward appearance!

4. Apply: Think of a time when you judged a person based on their external appearance only to find out later they were not as they seemed.

answers may vary

5. Look at 16:13-14. Match each name with the correct phrase:

David                        Spirit departed

Saul                          Spirit came upon him

Now focus on chapter 17

6. What details do we learn about Goliath’s appearance and armor? List them below (17:4-7)

9'9" tall, vs 5 says, "coat of mail" mail means scales... like a snake. it weighed 125lbs. His spear 15 lbs. So the author wants us to know that Goliath was a massive figure. However, the main point of this chapter is: Don't judge on the outward appearance!

It's interesting that for 40 days Goliath was taunting the Israelites, but no one did anything until David heard Goliath. In the end of Joshua when the land allotments were given out that Joshua and Caleb ask for the land where the "giants" lived. They waited 40 years to kick some giant behind.

7. Why is David confident in God’s ability to deliver him from Goliath (17:34-37)?

Because God was with him when he killed the lion and the bear. Goliath was no different.

8. In 17:45-47, David delivers a powerful message to Goliath. Read it out loud and then fill in the blanks below:

In whose name does David come? _______The Lord___________

Who will deliver Goliath into the hand of David?_______The Lord_________

Who doesn’t “save with sword or spear”? _____the Lord___________

Whose battle is it? ________The Lord's__________

9. Goliath ridicules the God of Israel, but it is God who defeats him using only a slingshot and a stone. What principle does this story emphasize? Look at 2 Corinthians t 12:9-10 to help with your answer. "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
