Proverbs Lesson 9: Wisdom & Relationships

Lesson 9

Wisdom In Relationships

  1. What human relationships does Proverbs associate with wisdom? Connect each verse to the correct answer.

      Proverbs 1:8                Wife

                                           Friend

                                           Mother

      Proverbs 7:4                Father

2. We will spend time on what Proverbs 31 teaches about marriage in the last lesson. For now,

look up the following proverbs from the collected sayings and note what positive quality

    each commends in a wife:

    Proverbs 12:4

    Proverbs 18:22

    Proverbs 19:14

3. Look up the following proverbs and note what negative quality each condemns:

   Proverbs 11:22

   Proverbs 12:4

   Proverbs 19:13

4. How do you feel about the behavior of husbands not being addressed in the collected

sayings? How would you explain this omission to someone who might take offense to this?

Wisdom & Families

5. What are the two primary ways that parents pass on wisdom to their children?

    1. Proverbs 1:8               By their ____________________________________

    2. Proverbs 23:26           By their ____________________________________

In your experience or opinion, which is the most effective way? Why?

6. Remember that proverbs are principles and not necessarily promises. Look up Proverbs

    22:6

What promise is often wrongly heard in this verse? What right principle does it teach?

    Wrong Promise:

    Right principle:

7. Apply: Though not all of us are parents, all of us have parents. Look up Proverbs 23:22 and

write the principle it teaches in your own words.

What factors can make this a hard saying for many?

Wisdom & Friendships

8.  What kinds of friends are not worth keeping:

     Proverbs 13:20                 Friends who _______________________________________________

     Proverbs 23:20-21           Friends who ________________________________________________

     Proverbs 22:24-25           Friends who ________________________________________________

9. Friendship is beneficial, both for what it provides and what it prevents. Look up these

verses and note what each teaches about friendships.

Proverbs 18:1          Healthy friendships prevent _______________________________________

Proverbs 27:9          Healthily friendships prevent ______________________________________

Proverbs 27:17        Healthy friendships prevent _______________________________________

Wisdom & Neighbors

10. How should a wise person treat his neighbor? Read Proverbs 24:28-29.

11. We examined wise speech in a previous lesson. Look at the verses below and note what

each teaches about our neighbor and our speech.

      Proverbs 11:9                                 Proverbs 11:12                                   Proverbs 25:18

12. Jesus, who held all wisdom, addressed the subject of neighbors head on. Look up Luke 10

      and note the following:

What question is asked of Jesus (10:25)?

What is the correct answer (10:27)?

What second question is asked (10:29)?

What famous story does Jesus tell in response (10:30-35)?

What is Jesus communicating in His answer to the lawyer’s second question?

     (10:36-37)?

13. Apply: Being a good neighbor can be hard work. What neighbor on your street or in your

life in general are you tempted to avoid because of differences, disagreements, or

inconvenience? What practical steps can you take to love that neighbor as you love

      yourself?
