LBS: Judges 1-2:10 "They Did Not Drive Them Out" Lesson 2

Lbs Lesson 2
Judges Chapter 1-2:10
They Did Not Drive Them out

The book of Judges is like a continuation from Joshua. It is not a light and fluffy book. Where Joshua is a book that shows Israel’s obedience and strength and creates faith, Judges is a book that exposes disobedience and unbelief. As you begin to read/listen, keep in mind of a few things: Notice any progressions or patterns with the Israelites; watch for comparison or contrasting themes, and lastly, keep your eyes on the women in these stories. We may think that we know these stories and characters, but we will spend much time getting to know them, and we will see things we didn’t know were there. Pray that God will open your mind as you open your Bible.

  1. Summarize Chapter 1 and 2:1-10 in 2-3 sentences each.

Now look closely at Judges 1:1-18.
2. Which tribe is tasked first with subduing the Canaanites? ____________

Who assigns them this task? _______

Based on what you now about this tribe, why do you think they are the first chosen?
Look up Genesis 49:1-12 to help you with your answer.

Which tribe’s help does Judah enlist? ____________

3. If you have studies the book of Joshua, the story in 1:11-15 is not new to you. It is quoted almost verbatim form Joshua 15:15-19. Why do you think it is repeated here? Remember there is no wrong answer so write down why you think this.

4. Count how many times the phrase “could not/did not drive out” occurs in 1:19-36.
    _______

Why do you think the author highlights this aspect of the conquest?

5. Apply: Think about your own battles to overcome specific sins. Which is a more
dangerous outcome when dealing with sin: a partial victory or a complete

   failure?

Now look at Judges 2:1-10.

6. Paraphrase 2:1-3

7. What had the Israelites failed to do?

8.What do you think of the peoples’ response to the words of the Lord? (2:4-5). Does it
seem genuine? Adequate? Explain your answer.

9. Look up 2 Corinthians 7:10. In the space below, write the two types of grief
      described.

      _____________ grief (sorrow) produces_______________

      _____________ grief (sorrow) produces ______________

10. Apply: How easy is it for you to apologize and ask forgiveness for an offense?
What factors keep your grief over sin from translating into genuine
      repentance?

What aspect of God’s character has this week’s passage of Judges shown you more clearly?

How should this change you in light of this fact?
