Genesis Lesson 6 4:16 - 5:32 "Genealogies'

LBS Lesson 6
Genesis 4:16-5:32

Last lesson we watched the effects of sin on the next generation of Adam’s descendants. How quickly the act of placing human will above God’s will degrade into the acts of murder. This week, we will watch the continued spread of wickedness along with the continuing faithfulness of God to provide redemption.

Most people don’t spend much time looking at the Old Testament genealogies, but we are going to take our time with them. Start this week’s lesson by looking up 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Ask God to show you the truth of these verses as you study Genesis 4:16-6:8.
Focus on 4:17-25 for the following questions.

  1. Look at 4:17. What project was Cain engaged in?

Look back at the curse God placed on Cain as a result of murdering Abel (4:12).
What does his new “building venture” suggest to you about the state of his heart?

2. In the chart below, fill out the column with the bloodline of Cain found in 4:17-18.

3. Look at Lamech’s oath in 4:24. Does his oath sound familiar? If so why? Hint: Gen. 4:15

4. Now look at 5:1-32 In the space below, fill in the names of the genealogy of Seth.

4. What differences do you notice between Seth & Cain’s genealogies?

5. Does Moses deviate from the repeated pattern at all in Seth’s genealogy? _______
    With which descendant? ____________________

What is that person’s numerical position in the line of Seth from Adam?_______

What do you think it means that Enoch “walked faithfully with God; then he was no
    more, because God took him.”

6. Look up Hebrews 11:5-6. How does it add to your understanding of the end of Enoch’s life?

According to this passage, what did Enoch possess that allowed him to walk with
   God?

Apply: Walking with God implies a life of steady, worshipful obedience. What
other “walking partners” are you tempted to spend time with? What do you

think characterized Enoch’s thoughts? Actions? Words?
