  1. In 3:1-10, the father exhorts his son to follow several instructions that are accompanied by a corresponding set of blessings. Fill in the table below to summarize the father’s appeal to his son.

Answers may vary but should look something like this:

Instruction

Blessing

3:1Remember God's laws

3:2 Long life & peace, eternal life in glory

3:3 Don't let mercy and truth leave you. Bind them to you.

3:4 You will have favor with God and man.

3:5 Trust in god -don't lean on your own understanding.

3:6 He will direct your path - make it straight.

3:7 Don't be wise in your own eyes. Fear god and leave evil.

3:8 It will be health to your flesh and strength to your bones.

3:9 Honor God by giving him your best 1st. Talent, abilities, etc..

3:10 Blessings will come. Your barns will be full. Overflowing.

2. What do you think it means to “find” wisdom (3:13)? Look back to 2:4-6 to help with your

    answer.

To search for it like you just MUST have it- like it is the most valuable thing in the world. It's not something that you just stumble upon. Intentional!

3. In the space below, note all the benefits wisdom provides to those who find her (3:16-18).

Long life, riches and honor, pleasantness in life, peace, happiness

4. Fill in the blanks below: (3:23-26).   “Then you will walk on your way securely,

and your foot will not stumble.

If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes,

for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.”

What does wisdom specifically protect us from (3:24-25)?

sudden terror, the wicked

Why is the Lord’s presence the source of this protection (3:26)?

He is our confidence.

Now look at Proverbs 4

5. What appeal is the father making to his son in 4:1-2?

Hear, pay attention, keep, get wisdom!

Who makes this same appeal to his son (4:3-4)? King David

6. How many times is the word “get” repeated in 4:5-9? 5x

7. In 4:10-19, the father describes two different paths available for the son to take or avoid.

Note all you learn about each path in the table below.

The Way of the Righteous/Wise

The Way of the Wicked/Fools

many years of life, freedom to walk

freedom to run; path is lie sun shining ;perfect day

No sleep; their sustenance is wickedness (bread) and violence (wine)

Path of wicked - darkness

In 4:23-27, the father gives his son instructions about several different parts of the body. List each body part and describe how it is to be used in order to stay on the path of wisdom. The first on is done for you…. You’re welcome…:)

Verse / Body Part

Description

Example

4:23   Heart

Keep it with all diligence

Out of it come the issues of life

4:24 mouth/lips

Put it away

Deceitful + perverse

4:25 eyes / eye lids

Look straight

stay on path

4:26 feet / all your ways

ponder path - establish feet

Your could get off track; don't wonder mindlessly - think, ponder.

Let's recap what we see so far in these first 4 chapters regarding Lady wisdom:

In chapter one

we read what wisdom is, the beginning of which was the fear of the Lord.

Chapter 2 : We saw what wisdom does or the value of possessing it.

Chapter 3: We read what wisdom "doesn't do". It does not get off the path of righteousness.

Chapter 4: Wisdom hears, receives and keeps words of wisdom. In this chapter was nestled that famous verse, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." Then Scripture says to put away a deceitful mouth, eyes, feet etc.. showing us that wisdom's beginning (fear of the Lord) is first a matter of the heart and that our actions will follow what's been inside our heart.
